Mr. Hall was one of the leading poets of his generation, frequently
mentioned in the company of Robert Bly, James Wright and Galway Kinnell.
In evoking a bucolic New England past and expressing a deep veneration
of nature, he used simple and direct language, though often to surreal
effect.

The Art Nouveau building, which houses a working art school, is
considered a work of art in its own right. It is best known for its
library — a multitiered gem, with distinctive fin-de-siècle chandelier
lighting; carefully wrought colored balustrades; elongated windows; and
ornamental carvings on tables.“

Anna’s book club was less formal, did not involve writing, and was
strictly a program to promote an appreciation of reading. She had no
illusions that she was positively affecting the inmates’ lives as a
group. But she wasn’t sure she was failing to do that either. She hoped
to reach someone. Maybe just one.

Like many teachers and councilors, all she could do was try to pull someone through the keyhold at the end.—George Pelecanos, The Man Who Came Uptown (Mulholland, Sept.)

At a Little, Brown luncheon held this past May at New York’s Javits Center during BookExpo, George Pelecanos expressed his admiration for the prison librarians he observed while he was teaching his writing classes His new thriller features a young librarian named Anna who opens up the world of reading to one particular prisoner, who upon his release must decide if he wants to continue on the path she showed him.
